Jacob Hoffman
Jacob, son of John and Nancy Hoffman, was born in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, February 1, 1841, lived in that county all his life, and died November 19, 1900.
He was educated in the public schools, and on the breaking out of the civil war enlisted in Company E, Ninety-third Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, serving nine months. After the war he returned home and resumed farming.
He purchased the old homestead and became one of the leading substantial farmers of Somerset county. He was an active and influential Democrat, and always took a deep interest in public affairs. He was a member of the German Lutheran church, and a man of high character and standing in his community.
He married (first) Eliza Miller; (second) Sarah, daughter of Samuel and Mary (Criley) Horner. Child of first wife: 1. Anna, married Samuel Bowman. Children by second wife: 2. Emma, died aged seven years. 3. Morris Lester, born 1871, died 1903; was cashier of bank at Boswell, Pennsylvania. 4. Harry Clyde, of whom further. 5. Ira Welsh, born September 1, 1879; now resides on the old Somerset county homestead, settled by his grandfather. Children: Morris, living; one died in infancy; Anna Belle, living.
