of Josiah Kurtz,

Josiah Kurtz
Josiah, son of Jacob Kurtz, was born December 7, 1801, in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, died January 17, 1895. He learned the hatter's trade, and in 1821 came to Connellsville, being the first of his trade to settle there. He opened a hat store, making his own goods until the advent of machine trade hats, when he changed his line. He remained in business in Connellsville, and during his latter years he lived retired.
He served several terms as justice of the peace and one term as burgess of Connellsville. He was a Whig, and later a strong Republican.
He married Eliza Reisinger, born in Somerset county, October 10, 1803, died in Connellsville, October 30, 1891, now living retired in Connellsville. Children: 1. John. 2. Mary, married morton Betz, and lived in Virginia.
3. Morton F. Kurtz, killed in the civil war, at the first battle of Fredericksburg, member of Company H, One Hundred and Forty-second Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, 142nd Regiment; the Grand Army Post at Connellsville is named in his honor.
4. Joseph M., deceased, was a banker of Connellsville; married Martha Jane Cope. 5. Samuel, deceased. 6. Caroline, married Joseph D. Stillwagon; he is deceased. 7. Henry, of whom further. 8. Ellen, now living in Connellsville. 9. Christian, married Worth Kilpatrick, a banker of Connellsville.
