Robert R. Rhodes
Rhodes, Robert R., banker and coal operator of 1206 Citizens' Bldg., Cleveland, Ohio; born Cleveland, Ohio, Dec. 17, 1845; son of Daniel P. and Sophia Lord (Russell) Rhodes; educated in public schools of Cleveland, 1852-62; married, Cleveland, Sept. 30, 1868, Kate Newell Castle; one son living.
Began business career in 1863, with A. B. Mecker, coal merchant, Chicago, Ill., as shipping clerk; remained in employ until 1866; went to Cleveland, and became senior partner in firm of Rhodes & Co., extensive mine operators and large shippers of coal, 1867; firm dissolved 1885, and since that time has given attention to banking and mining; president The Rhodes & Beidler Coal Co., 1886-98, and formerly director Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railroad, Southern Railroad Co., Cleveland Electric & Railway Co. (was member of Executive Committee). Senior partner of Rhodes & Co.; now president The People's Savings Bank Co., The United States Coal Co., director Commercial National Bank, New York, Pennsylvania & Ohio Railroad; director and member Executive Committee National Commercial Bank, Great Lakes Towing Co. Recently elected a director in the Chicago & Erie and Cleveland & Mahoning R.R. Companies.
Served in Civil War as non-commissioned officer, Co. B, 150th Regiment, Ohio National Guard; and active service 1864; discharged August of same year. Republican; Episcopalian. Director The Bethel Associated Charities. Recreations: Yachting, automobiling. Clubs: Union, Country, Cleveland, Lakewood Yacht, Clifton.
