Thomas Thorndell
George H., son of William and Phoebe (Tie) Thorndell, was born June 22, 1815, in England, where he married Mary Ann Taylor, born April 13, 1812. They remained in England until 1843, being unwilling to leave against the wishes of the mother of Mrs. Thorndell, who asked that they remain in England until her death, which they did.
In August, 1843, they came to the United States, locating at Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, where his father joined him a year later, thence all coming to Uniontown. He was a shoemaker like his father, and lived a quiet, upright life. He belonged to the Masonic order, the Knights of Pythias and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a member of the Uniontown City Band, a Democrat in politics, and a communicant of the Protestant Episcopal church.
Children: Two died in infancy in England; John, Thomas , a private of Company K, One Hundred Sixteenth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, 116th Regiment, served three years and was killed in the battle of Five Forks, March 31, 1865; Caroline, deceased, married Alexander Tarry; Eliza J., married P. H. Buttermore, of Connellsville; Mary A., married Thomas Matthews (see Matthews ), Charlotte E., died in infancy; James A., died in boyhood; two others died in infancy. George H. Thorndell, the father, died in Uniontown, January 1, 1882; his wife, Mary A. (Taylor) Thorndell, May 31, 1898.
